Absolutely! The more data we collect on potentially dangerous locations, the more effectively authorities can implement safe crossing points.

All locations marked on the map are scientifically evaluated by the independent knowledge institute Vias institute. It studies, analyses and researches data and information related to road safety and mobility. Each location is ranked using a practical tool, based on a score (high, medium, or low priority). Factors taken into account include, among others: proximity to schools and bus stops, as well as the number and type of accidents that previously occurred at that location.

The responsible road authorities (cities or municipalities, and the roads and traffic agency (AWV)) make the final decision on which locations will actually be implemented. This is done after an extensive data analysis, supported by Vias institute and OVK - SAVE.

Authorities (city/municipality and AWV) jointly commit to implementing at least one safe crossing point based on the evaluation of the submitted locations.

Most often yes, but not always. A zebra crossing can, for example, be combined with a cycle crossing. Other options include crossings with a central pedestrian refuge island, adapting the traffic light system to full green phases, and more.

We encourage road authorities to always look at the broader picture. In many cases, a zebra crossing alone may not be the most suitable solution to improve safety. Alternatives such as reducing speed, adapting infrastructure more broadly, and/or increasing enforcement at the location may be more effective.

Yes! Road safety doesn’t stop at municipal borders. However, locations in municipalities not yet participating in ‘SafeCrossing’ will not be evaluated.
